      Description

Specs: 2024, 1st edition. Square 4to (11.5" x 11.5"). 303 Pages, 4.4 lbs. Numerous color photographs, artwork, recipes, bibliography. Red boards, spine titled in gilt.  Contributors include Leopold Amory, Kent Carnie, David Horobin, David Jones, Ferrante "Frikki" Pratesi, Daniel Royer, Simon Tyers, Mark Upton and Steve Williams, as well as celebrated falconers of the past. Available from Western Sporting Falconry, USA and Coch-y-Bonddu Books in the UK.

Few falconers have had more experience of flying falcons at red grouse than Patrick Morel, so it's no surprise that his new book is such a wonderful insight into his relationship with every aspect of that flight -- the grouse itself, its habitat, the falcons and the dogs, and not least the falconers and their individual qualities.

The historical background sets the scene perfectly, as falconers past present and future take their place within it. Patrick occupies a more significant place than most, which is rightly the preserve of the most dedicated few.

The Art of Red Grouse Hawking isn't a 'how to' book, but something much better -- perhaps it could be described as a 'why to' book. It's also an incredibly beautiful book, full of photographs by Patrick and others, and in particular by Leo Amory (who is to photography what Patrick is to falconry).

If you haven't already ordered a copy, I'd recommend you do so, even if grouse hawking isn't a realistic prospect for you.

I'm totally enjoying it. Very well done. Congrats to Patrick and a big thank you to everyone who was involved in making this book happen.
