To many raptor enthusiasts, wildlife artist Jonathan Wilde is synonymous with the American goshawk. Wilde boldly depicts his fierce subjects in "classic" northern Wisconsin goshawk habitat - mixed old growth hardwoods of maple, yellow birch, & aspen with a scattering of white pine & hemlock. It is early April and snowing. The female goshawk is incubating her freshly laid clutch. Hemlock greens adorn the nest. The viewer's attention is drawn to her. The male is returning from a hunting foray, easily packing a freshly killed red squirrel. The mood is one of subtle contrasts and harsh realities. The bleakness of winter is challenged by budding maples & multi-colored lichens; a death is offered to sustain life. The cacophony of ear piercing screams during courtship has given way to total silence. This pair has chosen well - a remote site with ample food - or so it seems? Wilde writes "The nest site was clear cut two years after we located it." Measures: 22 1/2" x 29".
